North British 50yo

My first post in an awfully long time but I just had to share this…

50yo North British single grain from Adelphi.

A deep mahogany red, silky and velvety.

Old, old sherry oak on the nose. Surprisingly vibrant fruit.

Hugely flavourful, fudge, dark intense fruit, bursting with character. Oaky but remarkably subtle. Black pepper. Amazingly complex: fruit to cereal ti warm spices to ancient wood and all the way back.

Lingering finish, warming and very, very satisfying. £270 rrp and what a bargain.

Uberach L’Ultime

Something a bit different tonight. French single cask whisky, finished (I assume it’s not full maturation at any rate) in a Banyuls cask.

What a beautiful dram, dark and rich like mahogany. The nose sweet and powerful with treacle, molasses and beguiling spices.

Palate: strawberries, honey, ginger, five spice, aged balsamic vinegar, old oak, almost port-like intense fruit.

Heavy tannins but beautifully smooth. Lingering finish.

Absolutely stunning, gorgeous whisky.

Many thanks to Franck Debernardi over at http://lacavedecobalt.blogspot.fr for the sample, I owe you something very special in return for this gem!

Lochside Adelphi cask 6778 46yo

unedited notes tonight!

Single blend (grain and malt from loch side)

46 years in a sherry butt, presumably?

Cherries
Bruised strawberries
Oloroso
Christmas cake
Leathery, old and patinated like an old Jag though, not fresh and strong.

Hugely tannic
Mouth drying

Moroccan spices – lamb tagine and deeply spiced couscous

Stunning.

22/12/11 GlenDronach cask 3314

20111222-214514.jpg

Another GlenDronach from batch 5 tonight, this is cask 3314, a 21yo PX.

Amazingly clean powerful sherry. Fruit cake, marzipan, ginger, nutmeg, 85% cocoa chocolate, rich sweet and syrupy old sherry.

Huge depth of flavour, beautifully balanced, this is really classy. Even at full cask strength, it’s smooth, very warming and beautifully silky. Water lightens the dram, some orange peel sneaks in with hazelnuts and old oak furniture.

17/12/11 GlenDronach cask 2512

18yo (91-10) Oloroso butt 51.9%

Beautifully smooth, sexy sherry.

Walnuts, leather, polished oak, Christmas pud.

Gloriously silky.

The finish is incredible: warming and luxurious.

Flawless whisky, absolutely superb.

P.s. in case anyone missed it, batch 5 went on sale at the distillery last week, including cask number 1!
