Signatory Mortlach cask 6069

20yo 1990-2011 Sherry butt, 521 bottles, 57.9%

A new addition to the collection tonight. First impressions are very favourable!

Rich, sweet, nutty, chocolatey Oloroso. Sherry trifle – sponge, strawberries and almonds. Ripe tangy plums, juicy and slightly tart. Oaky, drying, some lingering toasty spices.

Lovely.

14/12/11 Mortlach 21yo

Sweet, spicy fruitcake, red apples, cinnamon crumble. Very fruity with a nice smooth mouthfeel. Slightly smoky and a wee touch of heather.

Decent length of finish, again very fruity with sherry notes of sultanas, leather.

A decent dram but doesn’t live up to some of the other Mortlachs I’ve tried.

01/11/11 Provenance Mortlach 8yo

Mortlach, I love it!

Interesting point, did you know that William Grant learned his trade at Mortlach? I didn’t, until somebody at Glenfiddich told me a wee while ago. Mind you, it was a few years ago I suppose…

This is a recent bottling from Provenance, 46%. Sherry-finished.

Honeyed and very malty, lots of green fruit but perhaps some nicely balancing sherry fruit too (cherries?) Pastry, cream, freshly split logs. Long fresh finish.

An intriguing young dram, very different from the rich deeply spiced drams I’ve come to expect from this ‘still.

3/5.

05/09/11 Planeta Mortlach 18yo

This is a single cask from Mortlach, unusual because it’s been finished in red-wine casks and reduced to 46% for bottling.

Christmas pudding, serious sherry fruit, rich chewy oak, creamy chocolate, zingy orange, vanilla, espresso and walnuts. Beautiful body, complex and satisfying. Not too sweet.

06/06/11 Mortlach 12yo SMWS 76.61

An unsherried Mortlach tonight.

Beautifully sweet and dessert-like: tarte tatin and creme anglaise! Buttery pastry, sweet toffee apples, creamy vanilla custard. It’s bloody lovely.

4/5, a triumph.
