12/08/11 Glen Moray

Glen Moray cask 7251, 1st fill Sherry butt.

The nose and palate are superb with serious sherry influences of sultanas, deep sweet spices, rum’n'raisin ice cream, vanilla and marzipan.

All good but the finish is surprisingly short and a touch acidic. Such a shame, this was very nearly great.

17/07/11 Glen Moray NAS

An afternoon dram today, sláinte!

This is their entry level single malt, presumably around 8-10yo.

Green apples, loads of ripe young barley, a little sweet honey, a little balancing oak, a touch of vanilla.

Quite a refreshing dram but the finish is a little astringent, letting it down somewhat.

I’m gonna put some ice in it (sorry) and just enjoy it as a cool summery drink.

04/06/11 SMWS 35.45 Glen Moray 10yo “Stollen”

Something seriously different tonight. This is a 10yo, matured in a 2nd fill chardonnay cask.

I’ve never tried anything quite like it before…

A fairly lightweight spirit, pinky gold in colour.

Nose: thumping fruit (grapes and cherries), sweet barley but after warming for a few minutes it gets a little…sweaty.

Palate: orange, vanilla, oat biscuits, grape skin

Finish: powerful, long, dry and malty

It’s quite interesting but I can’t say I really enjoy it that much.

09/05/11 Serendipity

An alleged accidental vatting of 1992 Glen Moray and a “much older” Ardbeg.

Chill Filtered (sacrilege, very unArdbegian!) and bottled at 40% ABV this is an unusual beastie.

Nice long legs on the inside of my big tumbler – this is quite a heavy spirit. Pale pinkish gold.

Nose: light peat, light honey, vanilla and oak.

Palate: some smoke, peaches and cream, vanilla, freshly turned earth.

Finish: very dry, malty, a little smoke and a slight vegetative note.

Balance: a very delicate dram that quite successfully captures some of the Ardbeg character and tames it with light sweet Glen Moray. Certainly one of the better Islay/Speyside marriages.

This was £30 when new, it’s now very hard to find and getting freakin expensive. Well, expensive for me… (£200-ish).

4/5.
