05/02/12 Glen Elgin 16yo cask-strength

Slightly perfumed, slightly floral?
Burnt caramel
Orange zest
Drying sherry – fruit cake? Quite subtle though.
Quite spicy but, again, delicately. Allspice.

I’m really enjoying this one. The nose is quite different to the palate, it’s much weightier on the palate than I was expecting. It feels even more alcoholic than the advertised ABV suggests!

A complex wee bugger this, absolutely no gripes at all.

3/5

Many thanks to Alex for the sample. Slainte Mhath!

09/06/11 SMWS 85.20 Glen Elgin 10yo

Another single cask from SMWS tonight, a 10yo Glen Elgin, sherry refill butt.

Classic speyside sherry this: leather, spices, orange zest, sweet fruit. The nose is fantastic but the palate doesn’t deliver with as much power or intensity.

Finish surprisingly mellow with some soft honey and more orange.

I don’t love it but I certainly don’t hate it.

2/5.
