Dailuaine 1973 (Berry Bros)

20120713-143555.jpg

A Berry Bros single cask from Dailuaine – 1973-2010 37yo. At a guess, a refill butt.

Orange peel, dark fruit and surprisingly youthful malt on the nose.

Palate: toffee, cherries, pastry, light spices, a slight rubberiness (PX?). At 37yo it’s nowhere near as oaky as it might be.

Nicely balanced but I’m ever so slightly disappointed at the lack of drama.

Dailuaine Cask 4319

A 27yo single cask from Dailuaine, bottled in 2011.

Red apples
Vanilla custard
Cherry jam
Oak and furniture polish
Danish pastry, you know the flaky ones with raisins and that really sweet sticky glaze? Those!
Some lingering spices

Quite delightful. Complex, subtle, well balanced.

4/5

Many thanks to Franck Debernardi at La Cave De Cobalt for the sample.

A master of malt bottling from Dailuaine tonight, a 27yo refill sherry hogshead. Courtesy of Joshua at JSMWS, slainte!

Heavily spiced but not a heavy spirit. Honey, ginger, some lighter fruit that’s a bit surprising – pears.

Sweet malt, again, quite light. I wouldn’t have guessed 27yo. Delicate but punchy, sweet but still beautifully balanced.

Impressive.

18/07/11 Dailuaine 16yo

Another new dram for me! Isn’t life a bitch?

Flora + Fauna 16yo. Dailuaine is probably best known for going into Johnnie Walker. I love the JW range so am very excited about this!

Nose: burnt caramel, dry spices from the sherry, dried orange peel,

Palate: very smooth, sweet dark fruit, very malty, slightly nutty.

Finish: sweet sherry balanced with oak and is that a little bit of smoke? Maybe, just a touch…

Very nicely balanced whisky. 3/5.
