30/06/11 AnCnoc 1996

15yo 46% AnCnoc tonight, one of my favourite Eastern Highland distilleries.

This is a new bottling, i was treated to a sample in my local whisky shop and couldn’t resist a bottle.

Some light sherried fruit and hazelnuts on the nose. Honey, oak, some vanilla, green apples, crispy barley.

It’s a cracking dram but, to be honest, i think i prefer the cleanliness of the 12 and 16yo.

3/5.

22/05/11 AnCnoc 12

I can’t believe it’s almost the end of May and I haven’t reviewed this already!

Beautiful sweet barley, like the 16 this dram is uncomplicated. A little smoke, a lot of fresh fruit (apples!), honey and vanilla. Light and delicate but rich and sweet, what stunning balance this dram has.

I love it. 4/5, it’s right up there.

11/01/11 (take 2) AnCnoc 16yo

Goshdarn it, only 3/4 of my post actually appeared :( let’s try that again:

AnCnoc 16yo.

Pronouned An-knock (I think!)

Another fairly local distillery for me, also known as Knockdhu.

Bourbon-matured, bottled at 46% (which is nice to see).

A great summer evening dram (sitting on the decking, after a barbie, before the cigars).

Light and dry, the barley is foremost but the vanilla from the american oak never far away. Really gentle, really smooth. Slightly spicy on the finish. A great palate cleanser.

Maybe not the ideal dram for a snowy night beside the fire with a dog at your feet but damned enjoyable still.

Let’s consider the rankings again:

3. An enjoyable dram, close to being really good. Maybe one or two little things that stop greatness.

4. Fantastic stuff, right up there. A great dram with no flaws.

This is a 3/5. Can’t really complain about anything, I bet if I wrote about in the middle of a hot July it would be a 4!

Sod it, 3.5/5. (Mainly because I suspect the 12yo is 3/5 too and this is better!)

Sláinte!
