Glenfiddich 1972 Vintage Reserve

Dry, surprisingly so. Heavy, dense spirit.

Very sweet – banana loaf, creamy vanilla, fruit cake, bruised strawberries.

Warming, incredibly smooth, Beautifully balanced and perfect neat: a stunning dram.

Dailuaine 1973 (Berry Bros)

20120713-143555.jpg

A Berry Bros single cask from Dailuaine – 1973-2010 37yo. At a guess, a refill butt.

Orange peel, dark fruit and surprisingly youthful malt on the nose.

Palate: toffee, cherries, pastry, light spices, a slight rubberiness (PX?). At 37yo it’s nowhere near as oaky as it might be.

Nicely balanced but I’m ever so slightly disappointed at the lack of drama.

Aberlour Cask 9643

20120417-211449.jpg

1st fill sherry butt from Aberlour tonight, bottled at a thumping 62.6%.

Oloroso fruit: sultanas, prunes, sticky damson jam. Milk chocolate. Cranberries. Orange peel. Medium oakiness.

Dry spices on the finish but a slightly off-putting rubbery note. It’s not nasty, it’s barely unpleasant but it’s still a wee let-down. Still a very enjoyable dram.

Glenfarclas 21

Sweet sherry, pineapple, strawberries, bananas, milk chocolate, vanilla, ginger, nutmeg, slightest whiff of woodsmoke.

Lovely stuff but the texture’s not perfect, hence the score…

4/5, I’ll tell you what though, it’s a bargain for £60!

Aultmore SMWS 73.44

29yo sherry butt from Aultmore, near Keith and a major contributor to the Dewars blends.

20120330-203216.jpg

Full-bodied, rich and sweet. Lots of oak, luscious, luxurious old sherry notes. Sponge cake, Toffee, vanilla, ginger. With water comes chocolate, walnuts and cherries.
