25/11/11 Yoichi 20yo

A cask strength 20yo from Nikka (Yoichi) tonight.

Very complex nose. Obvious sherry notes of intense sweet dark fruit, leather, walnuts. Slightly smoky, charred oak, more layers of smoke, malt and fruit on the finish.

With water and hand warming comes even more complexity. An almost islay-like harbour-fest. Oil, tar, sea air and smoked fish. Very peppery. Liquorice. Vanilla. Aniseed.

Very impressive, seriously good whisky. Incredibly well balanced. Beautiful texture. Just stunning.

02/11/11 Yoichi 10yo

A previously untried Japanese dram for me tonight, this is a 10yo Yoichi, bottled at 45%.

Dull gold in colour, viscous and oily in body. Toffee apples, lots of earthy peat, slightly spiced. Beautiful silky texture.

It’s a good dram, a tasty dram, but I’m not really getting it – it’s had fantastic reviews but I find it a bit flat. That texture and balance of sweetness and peat saves it from a poorer score…
