28/12/11 Port Ellen 1979-2003 3rd release

A big oily dram this one, smoky but not hugely so. Salty, oaky, tarry, peppery. Bitter dark chocolate and unripe pears.

Very dry and what an amazing finish, I’ll be tasting this tomorrow!

A very hearty thank you to Hans for the sample, Slainte!

4/5

No pic of the bottle, sorry ’bout that…

Salty sea air, creamy butterscotch, gentle woodsmoke. Almost grassy, despite the rich sweet oak, surprisingly delicate. Very light peat but lovely chewy malt.

Seriously long finish, gets smokier.

Water lightens it, adding floral, perfumed notes. Really smooth, really complex. A dram of contrasts, and quite amazing how balanced it is.

Great stuff, no idea what a bottle costs (if you can find it!) Must be hundreds, these days.

4/5, certainly one of the better Port Ellens I’ve tried.

Malmaison in Aberdeen have a superb whisky menu, including several very exclusive bottles from smws.co.uk. Highly recommended!
