01/10/11 Bunnahabhain 1963

Something really special tonight, a 1963 single malt Bunna, bottled in 2003. It’s a vatting of the last 7 casks distilled in 1963.

Smoke, sea spray, sweet sherried fruit, strawberries, peaches, straw, aniseed.

Lingering salty peat on the finish.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I need to drink this reasonably quickly, it’s been open too long!

It’s damn good, quite delightful in fact.

4/5, not quite a 5. Maybe. Hmmmm.

23/08/11 Bunna Darach Ur

Very little smoke, honey, light spices, sweet barley, hazelnuts some sherry flavours of dark fruit and toffee.

Good stuff, not what I was expecting though. Not obviously new oak, not obviously Islay but very smooth, sweet and fruity.

27/06/11 Bunnahabhain cask 947

Something new for me tonight, single-cask from Bunnahabhain, bottled by Adelphi.

Deep, dark red like Iroku or Walnut.

Nose: Oloroso! Intensely sweet, summer fruit pudding, cherries, sultanas, vanilla cream.

Palate: all of the above with dark bitter chocolate, coffee, cinnamon (or nutmeg? I can’t decide), ginger. Sweet and powerful, spicy but with a little salty smoke around the edges.

A very long finish, the dram coats your mouth and throat with incredibly fruity, juicy sherry.

A very single-minded dram this, it could almost be described as lacking balance but i do really enjoy a sherry monster and this is just complex enough that i’m not going to criticise it for it’s massively powerful sherry delivery.

I love it.

10/03/11 Bunnahabhain 18yo

Bunnahabhain. One of the first Islay distilleries I ever really enjoyed (I was 16 I think…)

Anyway, the dram in question tonight is an 18yo distillery bottle, 43%.

Sherry notes are obvious on the nose, spicy and rich, along with some sweet barley and a little butterscotch.

On the palate it’s still the sherry, perhaps some nice buttery pastry. Oak. Vanilla. Hazelnuts. Little smoke or the bracing sea air you’d normally expect from a good ‘bunna.

A very drinkable dram, probably not worth the money I paid for it though. A wee bit dull. Hardly crap though.

10/02/11 Bunnahabhain 12yo

Bunnahabhain 12yo, distillery expression, 40%

Sweet and salty, subtle sherry, subtle peat, subtle vanilla. Short but a very tasty sweet oaky finish

A really delicate Islay dram this one. Really smooth, the flavours tickle and tease you rather than slap you about.

Mind you, I like the Islay slap sometimes…

An Islay malt for those who say they don’t like Islay malts, this is very inoffensive and easy to drink.
