21/01/12 Bowmore cask 85212 (Duncan Taylor)

20120121-211942.jpg

A 29yo Bowmore tonight from Duncan Taylor.

The nose is…surprising. Very delicate.

Wet grass. Heather. Turkish Delight. Banana skins, lavender, slightly earthy. Buttery fudge. White chocolate.

Fascinating. Highly unusual, lovely.

4/5

03/10/11 Duncan Taylor Bowmore Cask 85161

A 1982-2010 cask from Bowmore tonight, bottled by Duncan Taylor of Huntly.

Surprisingly gentle peat, carbolic soap, tar, very salty oak, smoked gammon, salty crackling.

A far more subtle dram than I was expecting, I’m very tempted to buy a bottle.

Initially I’m going to give it a 4/5 but I’ll retaste it if I get a bottle. I’ve got nothing bad to say about it at all!

Many thanks to Nick Sutherland at the Aberdeen Whisky Shop for the dram :)

19/09/11 Bowmore Legend

How would you describe Islay whisky to a dramming novice?

Coastal?
Peaty?
Smoky?
Salty?
Citric?
Oily?
Medicinal?
Tarry?

This bowmore (a distillery I’ve often described as being my least favourite on Islay) has all of the above. Beautifully balanced but oddly subdued. It’s a delicate dram, lots of flavours but lacking power. That’s not necessarily a criticism but my personal taste sways towards really punchy islay whisky.

3/5, much better than I remember.

21/07/11 Bowmore 16yo 1990 Sherry Matured

I’m on my 3rd bottle of this dram, not tonight I may add.

The nose is smoky, oaky and salty, like a driftwood bonfire. Some sweet fruit, some light spices. The sherry’s more pronounced on the palate with delightful sweet smoke in the background.

It’s not the most complex dram but it’s one of the most successful pairings of sherry and peat in my book, this is a beautifully balanced scotch.

3/5

20/06/11 SMWS 3.149 Bowmore 10yo

The delights of the SMWS naming conventions…

This Bowmore is a pretty good example though, it’s very meaty, the peat is subdued but there’s diesel, tar and salt spray, balanced with some sweet oak.

Beautifully balanced between tangy, savoury, sweet, smoke and spicy.

This is probably my least-celebrated Islay distillery but I’m really enjoying this.

3/5.
