SMWS 121.50 Arran

“Xmas Cake and afghan coats”

9yo refill sherry butt from Arran tonight. I always have high expectations of these bottles from distillery 121, the very first SMWS bottle I ever tried was a stunning Arran and it convinced me to join.

Afghan coats eh? Nope, no idea where that’s coming from!

Dark and beguiling this, heavily spiced, meaty, chewy and full bodied. Wonderful nose of sherry oak, molasses and moss.

Treacle sponge certainly. Struck matches? Funnily enough, I sort of get that vaguely sulphuric, slightly acrid, slightly smoky hint but I doubt I’d have identified it ad s struck match, to be honest I still wouldn’t.

It’s a decent dram but it’s not as well balanced as some arrans I’ve tried. A wee bit of a letdown.

12/02/12 Highland Park Thor

Thor, the Norse god of thunder. An aptly named dram, it’s a powerful, stormy bugger.

Far smokier than I was expecting.
Coastal rock pools
Shortbread
Black pepper
Syrup sponge
Ginger
Freshly-sawn oak
Cinnamon
Vanilla fudge

It’s a multi-layered dram, complex and interesting. Impressive but I don’t love it.

25/12/11 Jura Prophecy

Merry Christmas!

One of my prezzies on review tonight: a Jura.

Now, Jura is a distillery that I’ve never really got along that well with.

This one smells pretty special. Intense peat, rich, earthy and heavily spiced.

Bitter woodsmoke and water-damped embers.

I love the coastal aspects of this dram: tar, creels, oily water, sea air and wet wood.

Unfortunately, there’s a bit of a clash between these wonderful fresh and powerful characteristics and a slightly over-sweet caramel.

Pretty good though.

12/12/11 Arran SMWS 121.35

20111212-205658.jpg

Another single-cask Arran tonight, I went through a bit of a phase of buying every bottling of distillery 121 from SMWS, some are much better than others though.

Loads of spicy, fruity sherry. It needs a good amount of water to find the sweet-spot, maybe 50%.

Stewed dark fruits, fruit cake and brandy sauce.

Not bad, not great. Just a bit…ordinary.

07/12/11 Tarasgeir

Something totally different tonight: Ale!

This is a brew from the Isle of Skye brewery and is made from peat-malted barley from Ardmore (my local distillery).

It’s light, creamy, sweet and utterly lovely. Apparently the ale connoisseurs don’t like it but I think it’s smashing!

Not peaty, not smoky at all. Surprisingly refreshing!
