31/10/11 Oban Distillers Edition 5yo ’95/’10

Another DE Oban, this one distilled in ’95 and bottled in 2010.

Surprisingly smoky and salty on the nose, apples, tart unripe pears, some sherry fruit.

Another nicely balanced dram, really very different to the ’85, a lot less sherry influence and not quite so sophisticated.

23/10/11 Oban Distillers Edition 1985/2001

Sherry notes of hazelnuts, cherry pie and vanilla-rich cream. Spiced (stewed) apple and plum pudding. Surprisingly dry.

A waft of gentle peat smoke and some salty coastal sea-air gives provides some beautiful contrast.

This was a sample from a whisky mate (cheers Alex!) so I don’t know the exact details of the maturation.

Long and oaky on the finish. Some cinnamon.

Highly recommended but probably difficult to get hold of these days.
