09/07/11 Glengoyne 14yo

A litre bottle from the Portsmouth-Caen duty free ferry.

Official tasting notes described spiced apples and a rather haughty “untainted by peat smoke” notice.

This is quite a sweet dram, I get what they mean by apples and cinnamon, I get vanilla and a little dark, dried, sherried fruit.

A really enjoyable dram, one that I overlook, unfairly.

26/01/11 Glengoyne SMWS 123.3

A single-cask 8yo Glengoyne tonight, unusual because it’s matured in a port pipe.

Really sweet, dark chocolate, cherries, plums orange zest and cream. Delightful long sweet oaky finish.

A thoroughly enjoyable dessert and one of the few single cask drams I enjoy most when neat.

I first tried this at an SMWS tasing session a couple of years ago and the majority of attendees hated it apparently. I loved it and am on my 2nd bottle.

Great stuff, not quite as complex or perfectly balanced as the best (duty-free) 21yo Balvenie Portwood but then it’s a heck of a lot younger.

4/5.
