13/12/11 SMWS 19.42

SMWS again tonight, this is a 19yo from Glen Garioch in Old Meldrum (another of my local Aberdeenshire distilleries)

Golden syrup
Honey
Treacle
Gingerbread
Vanilla (lots and lots!)
Toffee sauce
Gentle peat smoke

The official tasting notes mention menthol and I almost get that…but not quite. It’s very subtle, perhaps a note of eucalyptus. Maybe.

Astonishingly complex whisky, wow. The palate doesn’t quite live up to the nose but it’s still a remarkable dram.

4/5

25/09/11 Glen Garioch 15yo

An old bottle (recently opened though) of Glen Garioch 15yo.

I love it. Honey, ginger biscuits, gorgeous pure malt, a little sweet smoke, light spices and sweet earthy peat. Beautifully balanced and a wonderful character.

4/5 and that’s being a bit grippy. It’s that good and, in my opinion, far outshines the newer range of bottlings from this ‘still.

I’m going to buy some up while stocks are still available, this could be a future classic from this sadly underrated distillery.

10/08/11 Glen Garioch SMWS 19.42

More Glen Garioch tonight, a 19yo Hogshead.

I must admit, I’ve found the recent distillery bottlings lacking a little, especially compared to the older range (the 8 and 15yo “stag” bottles in particular.)

I just opened this bottle, it’s been sealed on my shelf for at least a year, possibly more.

Very oaky, apples, pepper, wet grass, treacle and is that a little hint of chilli?

A surprising dram, typical of Glen Garioch in some respects, and a very enjoyable one.

3/5 feels a bit mean, 4/5 a bit generous. Damn those integers.

07/04/11 Glen Garioch 1991

The last of my new Geery haul tonight.

This is a 19yo single malt, bottled at cask strength (note, it’s not a single cask.)

Distillery Tasting notes are pretty similar to the first two: vanilla; butterscotch; honeycomb; orange peel, oak spice and smoke.

I’ve found this quite an intriguing dram. It’s got loads of spicy honey but it’s not that sweet, there’s a surprising slight dark-chocolate hint and deep dark fruit. long finish helped by the weight of the spirit but there’s a slightly bitter and acidic edge to it.

2.5/5.

My own notes are a little closer to the distillery ones tonight: vanilla; butterscotch; honeycomb; orange peel; mocha; oak spice; warm heather smoke.

Vanilla, oak, honey, spicy sweet orange peel, oak and a waft of smoke (but wood, not heathery peat!). Great stuff, subtle, fruity, rich and all accompanied with lovely spices and that sweet wood smoke.

Finish a tad on the short side but otherwise I have no complaints at all!

3.5/5.
