19/04/11 Cardhu 27yo

Rare Malts 27yo Cardhu tonight.

Deep intense malt, hazelnuts, some wood smoke, honey and roast ham.

Water opens it up beautifully with sticky toffee pudding, really powerful, really fruity, really spicy.

Long thumping malty finish.

What a beast of a dram, great stuff.

4/5.

I bought this at the Thainstone whisky auction last year, I think I paid about £60 for it and that makes it an absolute steal.

26/03/11 Cardhu Special Reserve

Cardhu Special Reserve.

Cardhu, unfortunately, is probably best known for the whole “pure-malt” debacle of 2003. They stopped selling their single-malt and replaced it with a blended malt or vatted malt with near-identical packaging and called it a Pure Malt. Bit cheeky really and tt upset a lot of people but, in actual fact, the dram was pretty good!

Honey, sweet warm spices (ginger, cinnamon), lovely ripe barley, damp grass and dry sweet oak. Smooth, creamy mouth feel. Slightly short finish which let’s it down a little.

A really nicely balanced dram but not a hugely exciting one.

2/5. Feels a bit mean but I don’t think it’s worth a 3.
