16/12/11 Ardmore 1991

A single cask by Gordon Macphail tonight, a 15yo.

Toffee Apples
Cinnamon
Wood smoke
Very oaky (green oak sap), wet branches
Black pepper

Tasty…but a bit lacking in depth or complexity.

10/12/11 Ardmore SMWS 66.31

Another SMWS dram tonight, this is an 11yo refill sherry butt from Ardmore in Kennethmont, just up the road from my house.

Intensely sweet sugary fudge
Sweet BBQ ribs
Burnt toffee
Dates
Ginger
Malt loaf

So, two themes here: loads of smoke and sweetness. Bit of an odd pairing but it’s surprisingly well balanced.

Something totally different tonight: Ale!

This is a brew from the Isle of Skye brewery and is made from peat-malted barley from Ardmore (my local distillery).

It’s light, creamy, sweet and utterly lovely. Apparently the ale connoisseurs don’t like it but I think it’s smashing!

Not peaty, not smoky at all. Surprisingly refreshing!

11/08/11 Ardmore 1991

Gordon & MacPhaill, 1991, cask-strength.

Apple pie and custard! Seriously, caramelised green apples, buttery pastry, light spices and vanilla custard. Some sweet, heathery, earthy peat, a little whiff of a hardwood fire.

Very nicely balanced dram.

08/07/11 Ardmore SMWS 66.29

My most local distillery tonight: Ardmore.

This is a 23yo hogshead from SMWS. Official tasting notes describe cigars, raincoats, mediterranean herbs, liquorice, bbq, marmalade, coconut and honey.

it’s a big smokey bugger all right. I get the bbq notes, like overdone pork ribs. I think there’s a menthol-like mintyness on the finish that’s unusual but not unpleasant.

With water comes mellow sweetness, the smoke becomes more gentle and there are certainly some herbal floral notes. No liquorice for me though!

3/5.
