Red apples, treacle, syrup sponge, muscovado, sultanas, prunes, red wine tannins, black pepper.
Very oaky, almost overpowering in its intensity. So woody it’s like furniture polish! Well, maybe.
A really powerful dram, not subtle but full of character. Quite unlike anything I’ve tried before. I’ve had a ’97 Springbank before but obviously a different cask.
I’m going to say 3/5, it’s a good dram but a little short on sophistication if not on delivery…

Bottled as Hazelburn (a distillery that closed in the early 1900′s) this is actually produced at Springbank.
It’s a very malty dram, some dry spices (black pepper in particular), pear cider, oaken vanilla is very noticable on the finish.
I’m really quite enjoying this tonight, I’ve only tried it once or twice before and I was never blown away.
It’s a subtle, sweet, throughly enjoyable scotch. Perfect for a warm summer evening.

Well now, this is interesting one. I’d never tasted it before until one day in the summer of 2009 and I saw it on offer in my local Costcutter (a scottish chain of small rural grocery stores).
Bought it.
Tasted it.
Thought: “mmm, it’s ok, bit dull really.”
Put it on the shelf and barely noticed it again.
Anyway, I got home from work today to a sick and very grumpy baby, a list of jobs I’d been meaning to do for age and a general malaise and uptightness of the soul, curable only by a generous dram, possibly even several.
“What should I have? Something new for the blog, something I can drink with abandon, not to worry that if I get a taste for it I’ll drink £200 or possibly more just because I feel like it… Ooh, Springbank, that’ll do.”
And you know what? It’s lovely. Sweet, juicy, tart, fruity, creamy-smooth, smoky and really prominent traditional malted barley (I know that sounds daft but if you drink whisky, I bet you know exactly what I mean…)
What an awesome dram and all the more enjoyable because it was unexpected.
Oranges and spices like a well-matured highland, oil, peatsmoke and salt like a gentle islay, that sweet barley like an unfinished speysider.
I’m really impressed and not a little confused. How could I possibly have been so underwhelmed before?
Superb stuff, in my current mood I can’t think of anthing I’d rather drink. Does that make it a five? I think so.
