27/10/11 Longrow 13yo (1989)

Longrow, like Hazelburn, is whisky from the Springbank distillery. Longrow is the brand attached to the most heavily peated spirit they produce and this is only the second dram i’ve ever had.

Earthy, heavily peated, organic, vaguely composty, sodden oak. With water comes a lighter perfumed note of rose water and some salty coastal sea air.

Not nearly as heavily sherried as I expected, not really comparable to Uigeadail or Lagavulin DE but an enjoyable dram by any standards.

26/10/11 Springbank Vintage ’96 Cask 260

Quite different to the 97 vintage from a couple of nights ago.

This is heavily sherried with lots of mulled-wine spices and depth of flavour. Orange zest, toffee, christmas pudding, fruitcake, apple and date cake.

Very long deep finish, beautiful.

24/10/11 Springbank Vintage ’97 Cask 789

Red apples, treacle, syrup sponge, muscovado, sultanas, prunes, red wine tannins, black pepper.

Very oaky, almost overpowering in its intensity. So woody it’s like furniture polish! Well, maybe.

A really powerful dram, not subtle but full of character. Quite unlike anything I’ve tried before. I’ve had a ’97 Springbank before but obviously a different cask.

I’m going to say 3/5, it’s a good dram but a little short on sophistication if not on delivery…

18/08/11 Glen Scotia 12yo

Glen Scotia 12yo, distillery bottling, 40%.

Sweet, spicy, fruity sherry.

Salty, earthy, slightly smoky.

Milk chocolate, hazelnuts.

A nicely balanced dram, lots going on and very drinkable.

03/08/11 Hazelburn 8yo

Bottled as Hazelburn (a distillery that closed in the early 1900′s) this is actually produced at Springbank.

It’s a very malty dram, some dry spices (black pepper in particular), pear cider, oaken vanilla is very noticable on the finish.

I’m really quite enjoying this tonight, I’ve only tried it once or twice before and I was never blown away.

It’s a subtle, sweet, throughly enjoyable scotch. Perfect for a warm summer evening.

Sláinte!
