29/10/11 Abhainn Dearg 3yo

Well, something completely new today.

Abhainn Dearg (pronounced Aveen Jarræk) is the first legal ‘still in the Western Isles, at Uig on Lewis to be precise.

Freshly baked seeded granary bread, gristy and toasty. Oats, honey, buttered toast, granny smiths, the lightest tang of young earthy damp peat.

Rubbing the spirit on my palms and cupping them over my nose reveals ginger and vanilla in the oak.

It’s clean and tasty and complex and really quite delightful.

4/5, I’m very excited to try more of this as the years pass.

Glendronach Distillery

I nipped up there on Friday afternoon to pick up a couple of bottles (Managers Cask 1610 and some more Parliament 21yo) and a group of Norwegians were staying at the distillery.

The tasting drams were out, look at the colour of that last bottle!

For £300/night per person you can stay in Glen House. You get a guided tour and tasting session by the manager, dinner, bed and breakfast.

Sounds good?

The icing on the cake is that you get the keys to a rather well-stocked whisky cupboard.

Hold me back!!
